Pastor’s Pen – 7 September 2012

Dear Church,

Sad news this week with the death yesterday of John Manson of Arrowtown. Westray and their daughter Fiona are supporting one another and are also well supported by the church and Arrowtown community. John’s funeral service will be held at St John’s on Monday at 2pm.

This week we conclude (for a time) our following of Joseph’s story.
Much has changed in his life: from rejection, slavery, prison and now power. And here we now see him reunited with his brothers. Clearly it’s not an easy meeting, you sense Joseph wrestles with his emotions, surely part of him wants justice or is revenge a better word, let kinship is strong, and love and responsibility is also present.
We all have a choice when it comes to dealing with our past: we can stay in the pain – we can increase the pain and shut the door on healing; or we can choose a better way, God’s way.
The text this week is Genesis 42: 1-29, 36-38 I also encourage you to continue reading to Genesis 46: 7

Lessons from Joseph: Family Baggage

a sermon from Sunday 5th August. Read Genesis 37:1-11; James 2:1-9

What a story!  Today’s text from Genesis reads like a modern-day soap opera, even though it was probably written 3500 years ago.

Over the next 5 weeks we will follow the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob and his favourite wife, Rachel. You’ll note as we explore their stories that God achieves God’s purposes despite seemingly terrible situations and despite the fact that the people often at the heart of the story are the least likely of people to be doing great things for God.As you listened to the beginnings of this story of Jacob and his sons you’d quickly recognise that they had a few problems.  These days we talk of ‘dysfunctional’ families – Jacob and family tick all the boxes. Serious counselling was needed. Continue reading

Dear Church,

I’m late, I’m late – had you noticed?
It’s been one of those weeks.
Please remember to keep your good quality, copyright free, images of the churches and diverse activities of our whole church coming in. Shots of the wider area from the ground or air would also be useful. Can you please share what you have by emailing them to me asap.
This week Geoff will be leading the folk at Frankton while I continue with Joseph’s story at Arrowtown and Queenstown. The readings this week are all of Genesis 39 & 40 – so get reading now. See if you notice what the text is saying about God; what it says about Joseph; and what it says about life? (Just a small question!)

Dear Church,

I need your help! The church website is currently undergoing a facelift. To make it look good we are in need of good quality, copyright free, images of the churches and diverse activities of our whole church. Can you please share what you have by emailing them to me asap. Any serious photographers out there – please get clicking.

This week I continue following the story of Joseph and draw some lessons from it for how we deal with the difficult things of life. Obviously much of what we see in the story is unhelpful at one level – Joseph, his father, and brothers seem to know how to get it wrong. Sadly we are not so different, and often find ourselves paralysed in the face of adversity or allowing that adversity to warp us and lead us into making decisions that have no logical base at all.
Joseph’s brothers got it wrong – how can we make sure we get it right. Reading from Genesis 37:11-36, Psalm 73 is also valuable reading.
